AB PURPOSE--To stablish reference values for neopterin (NP), beta 2
microglobulin (B2M), TNF and soluble interleukin 2 receptor (IL-2R) for
both HIV infected assymptomatic drug abusers (HIV DA) and HIV non
infected drug abusers (Non-HIV DA). METHODS--97 Non-HIV DA and 164 HIV
DA were studied. HIV DA were followed periodically since 1986-87 until
december 1991. At first visit we performed serum determinations for the
following biological markers: NP (RIA, Immunotest Neopterin, Henning),
B2M (RIA, Pharmacia), TNF (ELISA, Medgenix) and IL-2R (ELISA,
Immunotech). AIDS diagnosis was performed according CDC criteria (august
1987). Univariate and multivariate analysis were carry out with BMDP
statistical package routines. RESULTS--Significative differences between
HIV DA and NHIV DA were found for NP (p < 0.001), B2M (p < 0.001) and
IL2R (p < 0.01). Non significative differences were found for TNF. 25
out of 164 HIV DA (15%) progress to AIDS in five years. B2M > 2.9 mg/dL
(p < 0.005) was the parameter that reflects a greater progression to
AIDS in the univariate analysis. The multivariate analysis also
identifies B2M > 2.9 mg/dL as the parameter with high independent
prognostic significance (OR: 3.5, CI 95% 1.2-8.4 mg/dL, p < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONS--Reference values for NP, B2M and IL2R are different for HIV
DA and Non-HIV DA. High serum levels of B2M are associated with a
greater progression to AIDS in assymptomatic HIV DA.
